Actress Hunar Hali is playing Devika Basu’s character in the Deewani show. The supernatural genres are complicated, but Huna’s effortless performance is engaging the audience. The show is successful. In an exclusive talk, Hunar talks about playing the negative character, experience with the supernatural shows, and more. Check out the full interview here:
1– How do you deal with the trolling for playing the negative character?
Facing hatred indeed is part and parcel of choosing to play an antagonist, although professionally it’s a compliment, personally it does affect you, as we on our social media have family and friends too, seeing all this, so I tend to delete or hide comments that are way too harsh and derogatory .
2- Love triangle in the Deewani show; do you have any real-life experience about the same?
I’m a person who has always struggled with expressing complicated feelings in a relationship. Having joined the industry at the age of 16 and losing my father post that, my personal life was too messed up; therefore, any same real-life experience made me run far away from such instances, as I hate confrontations and complications.
Being occupied with work is mandatory for me, as work is the only thing that keeps me sane.
3- Do you believe in the black magic?
Yes, I do. If good exists, then so does bad; hence, I keep doing hanuman chalisa to keep myself protected.
4- Your experience with the supernatural shows?
I did a show called Chhal-Shey aur Maat on the Colors channel opposite Avinesh Rekhi where my character dies and becomes a ghost and the family members resort to supernatural powers to hurt my spirit. I still remember how hard that time was for me personally from my antim sanskaar in the show up until my spirit departs peacefully in the show after facing and fighting with supernatural experiences caused to hurt my character. I used to live alone in my apartment in Mumbai at that time, and each night I used to go back home after packing. I used to feel so jittery, and my body used to feel so cold, causing difficulty sleeping at night. I used to call my mom keep phone on speaker and ask her to do sukhmani sahib path on the phone, listening to which I used to fall asleep.
5- If you get an opportunity, what changes would you like to bring to the show?
I am an actor, my job is to perform whatever is asked, so I stick to that.
6- Which type of character do you like to play most?
The question should be what type of scenes I love performing the most because characters toh saare hi acche hote hai; real-life experiences se hi characters derive kiye jaate hai; therefore, scenes ka agar aap jaan na chaho toh. I’d say emotional scenes are the ones I love performing.
7- How do you prepare for Devika Basu’s character?
My character is alot like Hunar in terms of attitude, style, and confidence. Devika Basu, whom I discovered has a narcissistic personality disorder, she also suffers from psychosis. I decided to take inspiration from characters in movies such as Urmila Matondkar’s character in the film Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya to prepare myself. Rest. I kept taking my director and creatives suggestions and help. A director is a huge help to us as actors. Sir Arvind Gupta, my director of serial Deewani with whom I had worked when I was 17 years old, is a huge help to prepare and perform. Karne mein bahut madad karte hai. Director is everything; you have to surrender.
8- Comment on shows success?
Very happy and positive, fingers crossed, as I know we are going higher and higher and people are loving Deewani.
9- Would you like to spill the beans on the upcoming for the viewers?
Drama drama drama & more drama. Ab aane wale episodes aur bhi zyada entertaining aur interesting hone wale hai.
10- Talk about working experience with the Deewani cast, any favorites?
Pearl Grey Mam is brilliant. All her shows are too good. I’m so glad to get an opportunity to be a part of her show, Deewani. Shakuntalam production house bhi bahut accha hai, working with my Deewani director Arvind sir, my creative, and all crew members of Deewani is fab 😍 From the cast, my favorite is Nitin Goswami. He is a good actor and very professional.
