By Anil Merani: Simaran Kaur, a talented TV actor and anchor, is excited about her new venture, the Zee TV show, Jamai No 1 (LSD films), which has just premiered at 10.30 pm.
As the title suggests, the show centres around a smart house husband played by Abhishek Malik. Papia Sengupta plays the dominating mother-in-law, Kanchan, while Simaran essays the haughty wife Riddhi.
The ‘ghar jamai’ genre, which translates to ‘son-in-law living with the bride’s family ‘, is quite popular in Indian entertainment. Ravi Dubey had earned name and fame in his Zee TV stint. Several other hit films and TV series have been made on the same topic.
“We bring out the start differences to a normal wedding; here, Neel kicks the kalash when he enter the Chotwani household as opposed to the bride entering her in-laws’ place. We have completely flipped the gender role in marriage, which will be fun to watch
Simran further says “Till now, I have always played very traditional female leads (Aghori, Srishti, Agniphera and Aggar Tum Na Hote). But for the first time, I am playing a business lady who does not believe in love due to her past baggage. How Neel breaks into my heart is interesting.”
” I can so relate with Riddhi as both of us are passionate about whatever we do.”
Unlike most tube leads, my character Ridhi is always attired in chic western corporate dresses. I enjoy the same show as I dress in real life.”
Simran tried to deflect when asked if she would want her future husband to move in with her, saying, “What is the big deal? These things are secondary. What matters is compatibility and love. Where you live is not essential; living together well is the bigger deal.”
She also hedged the question about playing second fiddle to a male actor against the regular TV grain. “Our show is about the clash between three characters, and no single name rules the roost. Also, I have noticed that even in female-dominated series, the male characters have a lot to do. “
Regarding the ‘ghar jamai’ angle, Simaran says, ‘We bring out the stark difference to a standard wedding structure. Here, the husband kicks the kalash when he enters the house, unlike the bride entering her in-laws’ place. We have completely flipped the gender role in marriage, which will be fun to watch.’
” Simran, a voiceover artist (Nobita) and anchor (IPL, Zee Cine awards curtain-raiser and red carpet), expects this show to change her acting game. I am also game for non-fiction series. “
She would not mind trying Bigg Boss,” where I will win over the others by love. I can’t play games or act nasty, period. I am a simple gal who does not smoke nor drink.”
Looking ahead, Simran is determined to expand her horizons. She aspires to make a significant mark in OTT and films, showcasing her versatility and talent.
She would be open to bold web content if certain boxes are ticked (content and presentation).” I would cross the bridge when I came to it. For now, though, Jamai Raja No. 1 takes all my attention.”
Simaran, we wish you all the best for Jamai Raja No. 1 and your future projects.
