By Anil Merani: Ranveer Allahbadia’s decision to comment on India-Pakistan relations—particularly during a period of heightened tensions following India’s military strikes in May 2025—was a risky move, especially given his recent controversy over inappropriate remarks on the show “India’s Got Latent.” This earlier scandal, which involved a disrespectful question about parents and intimacy, led to significant backlash, legal scrutiny, and damage to his reputation, including FIRs, death threats, and a temporary confiscation of his passport. His comments, made at such a crucial juncture, had the potential to significantly impact the delicate India-Pakistan relations.
His Instagram post expressing solidarity with Pakistani civilians—while clarifying that he does not support their military or ISI—sparked fresh outrage, with critics labeling it as tone-deaf or anti-national in light of the geopolitical climate. The post, which he later deleted, drew accusations of seeking attention or misjudging public sentiment, especially since India-Pakistan relations were already strained after the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. The overwhelming backlash reflects the public sentiment, suggesting that many viewed his comments as ill-timed, especially as he was still recovering from his prior controversy, which had already cost him professionally and personally, including lost brand deals and diminished public trust.
On the other hand, Allahbadia’s intent was to promote peace, emphasizing that his message was about people, not politics, and reflecting his personal experiences of warmth from Pakistanis. Some supporters argued that he was exercising his right to free speech and attempting to foster positivity, which aligns with his public persona as a motivational figure. However, the timing—coming shortly after his legal clearance and return to public life—amplified perceptions of poor judgment, as he was still in the process of rebuilding his credibility.
Strategically, Allahbadia could have avoided further polarizing topics like India-Pakistan relations by focusing on repairing his image and reconnecting with his audience through less contentious content. Public figures often face heightened scrutiny during their recovery from scandals, and his decision to engage in a sensitive geopolitical issue, even with good intentions, invited predictable criticism in such a polarized climate. Waiting until his reputation was more stable would have allowed his message to be received with less hostility. However, steering clear of such topics could also be perceived as inauthentic for someone whose platform often addresses social issues.
Ultimately, while Allahbadia had the right to express his views, a more cautious approach—delaying or reframing his comments to avoid misinterpretation—might have been wiser, given the fragility of his public standing and the volatile context of India-Pakistan tensions in May 2025. This caution is especially important when dealing with sensitive geopolitical issues, where a single misstep can have far-reaching consequences.
